When it says "The important thing here is that because these were characters, you didn't get clean backgrounds using them. Here's an example:" the image is missing.

(to be more specific giving a peek in the source code: http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/dynaweb_docs/0530/SGI_EndUser/books/SWin_UG/sgi_html/figures/57a.exitdosedit.gif this file doesn't exist anymore)
