Environment

Windows build number: Windows 10.0.21292.0
Windows Terminal version (if applicable):1.6.10412.0

Steps to reproduce

When I tried to change the default profile, a new cmd.exe admin profile called "Default" emerged ->

Expected behavior

Expected that it would change the default profile from powershell to fedora(installed using rootfs)

Actual behavior

Another new profile emerged called "Default" which I didn't made!

@Krrishdhaneja Since you were using the Settings UI, looks like you were doing this on Windows Terminal Preview. This morning, we just updated preview to 1.7.572.0. I'm not able to get a repro. Do you mind seeing if you're still experiencing this with the new update? If so, could you provide more clear instructions on what's causing it? (changing the default profile and saving isn't causing it for me). Thanks!

sorry it took me loads of time to answer cuz my exams were going on, so I updated the terminal today and I recently install Ubuntu on WSL community preview as I want to test the beta versions, so after updating to terminal v1.7 another dropdown appeared, with the name 'Ubuntu on WSL community preview' along with the original profile Ubuntu-CommPrev i.e. two same profile but one with other color and font, it can be seen in the images below->

All of a sudden I got this same issue.
What i had done recently -

1. I had installed wsl and ubuntu image.
2. I opened terminal settings and tried to set the starting directory for wsl. For some reason, it kept on resetting to the default starting directory and would not let me change it.
3. After some time, I had no more use of wsl, so i uninstalled it. (This step might not be required, i have "alwaysShowTabs" set to false and i only use the default powershell profile, so i only noticed this issue now when i needed a different profile)

Then, i found that Terminal now showed a default profile. When i opened settings.json, i found a stray profile (note that this profile was in addition to the wsl profile) -

Without a "name" property, the name defaulted to Default.

It looks like some bug with the code that reads/writes from the SUI to the json file. For some reason, instead of updating a profile, it is creating a new profile with the only property that the user was trying to modify. It might also be related to some wsl handling.

I got the same issue after delete the old settings.json and try to make some changes from the new Setting UI.

After delete the old one I checked the new settings.json and its content seems normal and short.

At the end is the new settings.json file after this issue, and I didn't have the chance to modify it.

This issue is caused by the empty {} in the lists, delete it and the Default in the UI has gone.

And the empty {} was introduced because the colorScheme was writing to the wrong location.
Before I noticed this issue, when I change the profile's color scheme from the UI It didn't work.

@rzhb commented on GitHub (Apr 24, 2021): I got the same issue after delete the old `settings.json` and try to make some changes from the new Setting UI. After delete the old one I checked the new `settings.json` and its content seems normal and short. At the end is the new `settings.json` file after this issue, and I didn't have the chance to modify it. This issue is caused by the empty `{}` in the `lists`, delete it and the `Default` in the UI has gone.  And the empty `{}` was introduced because the `colorScheme` was writing to the wrong location.
