Interesting. We've seen this once before in #7976, though couldn't track it down that time. I don't think there's anything that we're doing that should cause this behavior, but I've been wrong before. If you re-pin the Terminal, does it go back into that spot that's currently "empty" (but still has the "Windows Terminal" tooltip)? Or does the Terminal get pinned to a new space? Does this persist across reboots?

If this is reproducible, could you file feedback under "Desktop Environment > Taskbar"
image

and then record the problem:

And repro the whole pin to taskbar, unpin, see that it's still there? That should get traces that the Taskbar team might be able to use. Once you sumbit the feedback, can you share the URL here, so I can make sure it gets in their inbox? Thanks!

nothing happens when I try to unpin
there is blank area in taskbar which says windows terminal on mouseover
and opens up terminal when clicked in the blank area

This was promoted to MSFT:36765067 internally. The taskbar team might need to follow up here to get more specific diagnostics (if need be)

I've been suffering from this problem for a few days now. I resolved this issue by going to the Recent Items list in my Start Menu, right-clicking Windows Terminal, clicking unpin, then closing all open copies of wt.exe and the problem disappeared. I am now leary though of re-pinning it to my taskbar, for fear of it happening again. I don't know how this is going to contribute to finding a permanent solution, but it was a fix for me.
