I mean, the Terminal already has a single raw settings.json file file for "backup". And #947 is tracking "add a button to restore to the defaults". That kinda what you're thinking about?

Or more a button to save the settings file out to a different path, and a second to load the settings from another file (overwriting the current settings)?

Hi @zadjii-msft. I am thinking more about the second, like in the PowerToys. It also has an internal settings file but it supports backup and even restores from your backup. See the screenshot below.
