Steps to reproduce

  • open vim with default scheme
    • in some *nix environment with wt 1.22+
    • remote linux via ssh in windows's shell or wsl, or wsl
    • color of highlighted words looks strange.

Expected Behavior

Behavior as in wt 1.21-, in bare powereshell or in bare cmd.
The color of highlighted comment in vim should be indigo blue, color of git diff index should be purple, as screenshot below shown, which is taken in bare cmd with vim 9.1 running in remote linux.

Actual Behavior

The color of highlighted comment in vim is fluorescent blue-green, color of git diff index is fluorescent blue, as screenshot below shown, which is taken in bare cmd with vim 9.1 running in same remote linux as above.

As tried, the issue appears since wt version 1.22.2362.0, and did not appear until 1.21.10351.0.

I know that vim has some additional knobs for tweaking color schemes... the one that sticks out to me is termguicolors (which uses 24-bit colors rather than their nearest 4-bit approximations.)

However, can you grab us a trace from the debug tap/? I'd love to see exactly what it's sending.

As an aside, the major difference between 1.21 and 1.22 is that applications in 1.22 receive "higher-fidelity" rendering when they support advanced VT sequences; this means that more applications render correctly.

This is the result of version 1.22 gaining support for OSC 11 queries. Vim uses that to detect if the terminal has a dark color scheme or light color scheme and adjusts its colors accordingly.

By default it assumes a light color scheme, which is why the text colors in version 1.21 looked so dark (they're designed to be readable on a light background). With version 1.22 it can now detect that your background is dark, so it uses brighter text colors.

You can force it to use the dark colors again with the option :set background=light.
