Windows Terminal version

1.22.11141.0

Windows build number

10.0.26100.4484

Other Software

Nvidia Drivers for RTX 4090 version 576.88
A 4K screen
Windows UI scaling to 150%

Steps to reproduce

  • Load a game on steam (in my case Risk of Rain 2, a lot of fun)
  • Alt+tab back to desktop
  • Open Terminal into a Ubuntu distro or windows cmd, doesn't really matter
  • Have the terminal in fullscreen, or not, also doesn't seem to really matter
  • Start typing for a while, for me it seems it takes few seconds ,~10seconds, sometimes it seems its the amount of characters that got output, like 10 lines. I can't really tell which happens first
  • Doing a ctrl+c to cancel and have clean prompt, then type "exit", the terminal shows me the prompt that I can change the default behavior of when a tab process ends, which suggests the inputs are being received by ubuntu/cmd, and the shell is indeed being terminated, despite the lack of updates in the UI (I can still create new tabs
  • Sometimes the entire terminal hangs, showing on the title of the window that is not responding. Trying to close it results in a crash report by windows being processed.

Expected Behavior

The UI should also reflect the state of the shell

Actual Behavior

The ui stops rendering any updates of the state of the shell

In some occasions in the past, I faced the same issue when in Teams calls with screensharing (my own screen) active. That is more problematic since it's for work, but not as easy to reproduce. With the game I can consistently reproduce.

Ok, it is indeed a duplicate of Terminal Unresponsive when Playing Games #18040.

Reading it I applied the fix of having some transparency in the window and that solved it for me:

  • Settings > Pick your profile > [Additional Settings > Appearance] > Scroll to transparency, and have "background opacity" to any value other than 100%
