Description of the new feature

Please don't shoot me @DHowett, but my feature request is to make opening panes more like how iTerm2 does it on macOS. 🤣

i.e. open a second pane, the screen is 2 equally-sized panes. Open a 3rd pane, it splits the panes into equal thirds.

Image

Command-d does the vertical splits. Then Shift-Command-d does the horizontal splits.

Proposed technical implementation details

Thanks for filing! This sounds like a /duplicate of #6002. Closing in favor of that one

I tried to find one first, as I was sure this would be requested... but I guess I didn't use the right search terms. Thanks man!
