Environment

Windows build number: [Environment]::OSVersion
Windows Terminal version: Version: 0.5.2762.0
LG Ultra HD (3840x2160@60Hz), 150% scale in windows
3072MB ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner)
AMD Ryzen 5 1600

No background image set in windows terminal. Removed my profiles.json recently to start fresh.

Steps to reproduce

Just happens after using the terminal for some amount of time. I am not sure what other information may be helpful in tracking this down.

Expected behavior

Screen doesnt flicker/tear

Actual behavior

When the Windows Terminal is focused it will randomly start to cause the entire screen (not just the Windows Terminal) to flicker and tear. I see the windows terminal window flickering in random parts of the screen. The tears show up as individual lines of pixels just randomly tearing/flickering across random parts of the screen.

@DHowett-MSFT Here's a video of it happening: https://photos.app.goo.gl/B3jVZUd6wyPvAWJXA

I tried a different cable (hdmi vs displayport). I played around with as many settings as I could on both my video card and monitor. It might be something wrong with my setup but it seems to only happen on Windows Terminal app and nothing else flickers like this.

This is fascinating. Do other windowed 3D applications not cause the same issue? Are you on the latest stable or latest "bleeding edge" AMD drivers?

I'll do some more tests if you can recommend something that runs in a similar mode but I actually do game development which runs with OpenGL and it doesn't cause these issues. I am just running the latest AMD but not bleeding edge.

I have faced this error and It was because G-SYNC was enabled in Fulllscreen and Windowed mode.

To reproduce:

  • Enable G-SYNC windowed and fullscreen mode
  • Open Terminal
  • Open a video in youtube with picture in picture

Everything will be flickering.

@DHowett-MSFT This also resolved the issue for me as well. Definitely seems to be related to G-SYNC compatibility.

I can confirm that the same is happening for me when G-SYNC is enabled in Fullscreen and Windowed mode.

When starting the terminal, the screen goes black for 2 seconds and then restores. The terminal flickers noticeably.

I also have this happening. Whenever the Terminal is in focus, it causes both my Freesync monitors (Samsung C49RG90 @ 120 Hz) to flicker on the sides, and moving the mouse makes it clear that the update frequency has lowered from 120 Hz to somewhere below 60 Hz (ballpark). Is that the Terminal composition/update frequency, I wonder? I'm guessing the Terminal is triggering the variable refresh rate somehow whenever it is in focus.

#649 appears to be the same issue. The workaround posted there worked for me (as I have an NVIDIA card).

Can confirm.

If running G-Sync with windowed mode enabled: Terminal will slow refresh rate down to 34hz (monitor FPS counter), when focused. Mouse is choppy. If you happen to have something driving a faster FPS it doesn't occur.

Repro: (most noticeable when running high refresh rates 120hz+)

  • Enable G-SYNC windowed and fullscreen mode
  • Open Terminal
  • With Terminal focused move mouse, observe choppiness (34fps)
  • Change focus to browser, observe smoothness
  • Open YouTube video and play, observe smoothness while focused in Terminal

My setup. Dual monitors, both high refresh (165hz).

Wait hold on, is this whole thread basically the same thing as #649? I'm not super literate in all the specific graphics terminology, but I'm pretty sure that this is the same as the g-sync thing. I believe we reached out to Nvidia to opt the Terminal out of g-sync, but I don't know if that's something they can just deploy with a driver update or what. You should be able to create an application profile for the terminal that disables GSync just for the Terminal.

I have a Radeon RX 580 with two Philips PHL 243V7 monitors on HDMI. When the Windows Terminal is open, after a while the screen starts flickering. Mostly that screen on which the Terminal is open, but not always that one. The very strange is when it starts flickering I can do anything it doesn't stop until after a while. Even restarting doesn't help. It flickers even I unplug the HDMI cable. The AMD FreeSync is disabled as it is not supported.

This happens ONLY with Windows Terminal. I use all my programs every day as usual, except the Windows Terminal and there is no flickering. But if I start it, one of my screens always starts flickering after a while.

Speaking of reaching out to Nvidia, earlier in the more relevant issue I posted a list of apps for which this happens: https://github.com/microsoft/terminal/issues/649#issuecomment-718102564 , but since I tested those at random I'm sure there are more MS apps and Windows components affected. Perhaps Nvidia should be told about some of the others as well?

I have the same problem. The monitor does not support G-Sync, only FreeSync and it is disabled. The second monitor is not affected by this issue. I have a problem if there is a lot of text in the terminal. All the tips I found didn't help. Today i found that If in the terminal settings I change the Text antialiasing to ClearType, the screen stops flickering and glitching. The screen flickering only with Grayscale and Aliased.

So, this is interesting. I'm on a 3-monitor setup (1xBenQ G2420HDBL in portrait mode, 2xGigabyte G27Q in landscape (2560x1440@144Hz, FreeSync Premium enabled), connected with DP cables to a MSI 4070Ti with G-SYNC Compatible enabled). The settings for both G27Q are the exact same, but the primary monitor will flicker only when I'm typing in the Terminal on the primary monitor. If I move the Terminal over to any of the other two monitors and type, none of the monitors will flicker. This is with AtlasEngine on, Redraw off and Software rendering off.

With that said, if I enable Rendering->Use software rendering (WARP) in the Terminal Preview settings, the issue seem to go away.

Edit: This is with NVIDIA Game Ready driver 535.98, and Windows Terminal Preview 1.18.1462.0 (MS Store package).

I'm not sure if this helps, but here is my setup and symptoms:

Setup:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X 16-Core Processor, 3500 Mhz (16 phys, 32 logical cores)
  • Video: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, 3840 x 2160 x 143 hertz, latest nVidia driver as of this writing
  • Monitor: ROG Strix XG32UQ, FreeSync enabled
  • HDR: supported and enabled

Symptoms:
Tabbing to/from Terminal periodically blanks the entire screen black for 1s or so, then goes back to normal.

Another interesting tid-bit: Recently this now happens in Microsoft Teams on the same system as well.

Other applications seem fine.

@NuSkooler @b0Stark For both of you it's due to FreeSync / G-SYNC. Here's the hotfix: https://github.com/microsoft/terminal/issues/649#issuecomment-1711714741
NVIDIA have told us that the issue has already been fixed on their end and will ship in a future driver version.

Environment

Windows build number: [Environment]::OSVersion

I have the exact same problem. I have an AMD graphics card and a FreeSync monitor. I'm not sure if I have it turned on or not. It flickers when it is printing, even if it's not rapidly printing.
